Winter returns to RIC!
RIC has not seen a significant winter weather event in more than 3 years, however that couldn’t last forever. 2025 has started off with a bang with a pair of book end storms that impacted the Airport on back-to-back weekends. Storm #1 was a two-day event starting on January 5th, with the snowfall total just slightly over 3 inches. Storm #2 was a quick moving storm that started on January 10th before moving out early on January 11th. The snowfall total for that storm was slightly under 2 inches, bringing RIC’s total snowfall for the season so far to 4.72 inches.
RIC initiated “Snow Alerts” for both storms. The full Snow Team deployed for each storm with the goal of maintaining airside and landside areas for commercial operations. Storm #1 resulted in some challenging icing issues after the snow transitioned to freezing rain however crews managed to successfully keep Runway 16/34 operational throughout the event. The cold weather impacted our region with water supply issues in the city of Richmond, as well as Henrico and Hanover counties. The Airport lost water service for 3 days between the storms and yet the RIC community persevered despite the challenging circumstances.
Advance forecasts are predicting more snow will fall at RIC in the coming weeks. One thing is guaranteed – we’ll be ready!
