RIC Joins the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Program
Richmond International Airport is proud to be among the growing list of airports who have joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Program! Launched in 2016, the Sunflower Lanyard Program offers travelers who have a hidden disability such as dementia or autism, a visible symbol to alert airport staff that they may require assistance or additional time.
Airport employees who encounter a passenger wearing a sunflower lanyard should follow these easy steps:
- Politely ask the guest if they need additional assistance.
- Listen closely and do not ask the individual what their specific disability is.
- Provide the requested assistance to the best of your ability.
Airport employees are encouraged to view this short training video, https://vimeo.com/801258086, on program etiquette. Please email Kevin Mallory at KMallory@FlyRichmond.com with the subject “Sunflower Training Password” to access the video.
Travelers wishing to participate in the sunflower program may obtain a sunflower lanyard at the following locations:
- American Airline’s ticket counter
- Delaware North – Applebee’s restaurant
- Delta Airline’s Ticket Counter
- Richmond Region Tourism Desk (baggage claim level)
- Southwest Airline’s Ticket Counter
- Valet Parking Office (baggage claim level)
